They sell wall paper removal compounds. You will probably need the palm-sized rolling perforator tool for the solution to soak in. I have learned my lesson - never put up wallpaper.
Renting a steamer is by far the easiest way. You can use a damp cloth but it takes so much longer. The steamers have a large steam head so you can remove larger areas quicker.
