Glue on and paint. It is easy to scratch so I don't know if that is a wise decision. Maybe the plastic ones that look like the old tile would serve better as a back splash since they are much more durable.
Lowes and Home Depot and Walmart all sell backsplash stickers that seem to work well and look authentic according to my peers.
They really are suitable for a backsplash. Melt and hard to clean.
