How much should it cost to construct a deck?
That depends on the size and the materials that you use. I would take measurements and price it out at the home improvement store.
Many factors come into play such as size, type of materials used (pressure treated lumber, maintenance free products, etc. You expect to spend $2000+
More than you expect. You will need to check deck building book or watch videos or HGTV shows to see proper methods. Determine size, price pressure treated joists, price the various decking materials (redwood, cedar, fir, man-made, etc.), determine if you need hand rails by code, determine the style of hard rails and material, price out all hardware. When you have that total, add another 10-20% because you probably missed something and there is always cut offs.
That depends on the scope of work: footings, size, framing spans, height, wood grades, and Building Permits.
Also, there are sunk start-up costs, no matter how small. If you don’t know what that means, lmk.
Please go down to your local building Dept and ask for their handout on Prototypical Deck Construction.
They can’t officially recommend who to build your deck, but if you phrase it like, Who do you see building decks a lot around here? Whose name is on those building permits? Then you’ll have a list of qualified builders, in your area.
Then sit down with pad of grid paper & design your deck, with the Handout.
Then you can fax or email a screen shot of that to qualified licensed deck builders, for apples to apples bids.
If you want a design that requires architecture skills, beyond the handout, then lmk and I will tell you how to hire a local architect.
Thanks for all this information. I’ll do my best to use it as I proceed.
As Cheryl recommended, visit your permit office. Anything attached to a structure requires a permit. Here are some sites to use as a guide for budgeting.
