Hey Bessie! It's definitely doable - just because you rent, it doesn't mean you can't make the space your own!!
Do you know if you are allowed to paint? Also, are you comfortable patching holes in the wall (if you were to ever move out?)

Why not buy inexpensive bookcases from a store like Ikea, and put them where you want them. When you're ready to move, take them with you. (Don't forget to anchor them to the wall if they're tall or if you have small kids who might try to climb them.) Even a wall anchor will make only one or two small holes to be patched.
