What Zone are you in? You can re pot and keep as a houseplant, or in spring, plant in ground and it will a lovely shrub. One of my local parks requested poinsettias from the residents that were going to toss them. They planted along a chain link fence to hide it as they grow. We are in zones 9 and 10.

I have plants that are a couple of years old. I keep them inside near a window. Don't over water...but keep the soil moist. I freshen the soil at least once a year. As they get bigger, I transplant in bigger pot. I live in northeast Ohio, in the summer I keep them in my sunroom. As Christmas gets near, I put them in the basement near a heater vent and cover so that the green leaves turn red (like a green house). I have never tried planting them in the ground. Good luck.
The need 8 hours of darkness. Street lights and other lighting will keep them from blooming.
cut them back in the 2 months that start with A, April and August. if you live in a warm zone you can plant them outside, other wise re-pot to a bigger pot and keep in the house.
Thank you so much!
