I would think you could use clear wax rubbed on/off the cabinets .... maybe even. Dare I say it... Annie Sloan has a dark wax that you could use very sparingly .... I think i would try the dark wax especially if there is any detail that you want to call to attention to...
Clear wax works well to tone it down. If you still hate, it, rub it down with mineral spirits. It doesn't remove the wax, but it helps them to blend together.

If you want to remove it, you could try ammonia or a wax stripper. At that point, you can start over and choose a color or finish that you do like to replace it. There is also the option of using a dark wax to mask the brightness. Wishing you the best.
