Rusting Bathroom Sink

My bathroom sink has started to rust. It is built into the cabinet and if I have to replace it I will have to rip out the beautiful pink tile! Does anyone know of anything that will stop the rust?
This is the sink. The rust stains are starting to flow down and I can't seem to get them off.
This is the worrisome spot. It just keeps getting worse!
The drain isn't as bad but it is getting there.

  • Once the sink starts to rust its shot. Nothing you can do will save it. If you look under the sink you will see that the overflow drain that is the slot up near the edge is rotted out as well. You can install a lay on top sink that rests on top of the tile so you do not need to destroy the sink tile. Measure the sink opening and look around for a lay in sink. You should be successful in finding something that would fit.

Maybe you can cut out the tile just around the sink and then fill it back in with a small decorative tile.

I don't know how badly damaged your sink is underneath the rust, but I just tried a tip by another commenter regarding rust in a kitchen sink and was amazed at how it worked. Try pouring Lysol toilet bowl cleaner over the rust (gel kind so it stays in place) and let it sit for awhile (I think I let it sit for 30 min while I was looking up another stain removal tip). Scrub with a dish scrubbing brush and whaa laa, rust gone! If nothing else, you might be able to see how bad the damage is once the rust stain is removed. Then maybe try one of those DIY porcelain repair kits from Home Depot if not too bad. You might also want to check into having your sink reglazed, rather than tear out your tile. Good luck!

Ouch! Just took another look at your sink overflow. Try the Lysol and then call a company that specializes in reglazing tubs and sinks. They do minor repairs and MIGHT be able to save your sink. Be sure you get a company with a good reputation.

My personal opinion it to "bite the bullet" and replace the sink. Before you know it IF left,......you will maybe have more issues than just "the beautiful pink tile". IF you feel you are not able to do the replacement yourself ....then call around, ask your friends as well, for referrences of people they may have used-are satisfied with the end result and get it replaced professionally. As I said.... IF left, it could leave you with a far bigger issue than you may be prepared to deal with.....imho.

I just love that you love you Pink Tile! I had my tub (from 1959) reglazed. It had some rust around the drain. The reglazing company took out the old drain and cleaned all the rust from the porcelain areas reglazed! They put in a new drain and my tub looks like brand new. It has been 4 years and it looks like the day they did it. Have the company out soon so it does not get worse! My tub cost $495.
