The older the stain, the harder it can be to remove. Pretreat it as soon as you notice (I use Resolve spray). Blot as much as you can. Then, sprinkle baking soda over it, without getting carried away, since you will have to vacuum it up later (just a light cover) and then pour enough white vinegar over the baking soda for it to bubble over the stain. Let it dry. Usually you will see the stain start to lift into the powder. You can add more vinegar if needed, since you will get the same chemical reaction as long as long as there is baking soda on the rug. So, if I can still see the stain as I remove the powder, I stop and add more vinegar and let it dry again. Sometimes it takes a few applications, but, I've taken some terrible looking stains out with this method. Good luck!

I've had good luck with vinegar and hot water. Pour vinegar on first and let sit for a couple of minutes. While it's sitting heat up water in the microwave using a coffee cup (because it has a handle) and pour the hot water on the stain. Use an old towel or wash cloth to get the liquid up.
As soon as the dog pees, pour salt on it. Really mound up the salt. Leave it for at least a full day. The salt will absorb all the pee and form a solid hard mound. Slide a piece of cardboard (a piece of an old folder works well) under it and lift it off the carpet and throw away. Now clean as suggested in other posts, or I use Resolve spray cleaner.
There is a product that I have used, it worked. Called Kids and Pets, available in lots of stores, pet shops. removes both the stain AND the odor.
