No sealant is really food safe just a surface pretectant. Raw wood like butcher block is sealed with mineral oil, salad bowl finish, or butcher block finish making it food safe.

Agreed, I treated my butcher block island for well over a year and got tired of doing it every month or so. I used Howard Butcher Block Conditioner and mineral oil. Both worked beautifully. I do not use my butcher block as a cutting board. So I used a matt polyurethane. According to the manufacturer, after the poly sets and dries completely, it is food safe as long as you do not cut into the poly. So it is quite safe to "prepare" food on.

your better off painting , there is paint available for this i did this and it lasted 5 years before i tiled right over the painted counter...i used large 16x16 tiles to limit the amount of grout lines.. did 2 6ft runs for about $30 , got tile at habitat restore store.

    good luck

As contact paper is not a recognized building material, it will soon collect moisture and bacteria in hairline cracks and seams, and when it begins peeling.

Although it seems to be getting lots of talk these days as a cheap covering for worn out countertops, contact paper is not thick enough or durable enough to withstand the cleaning that a kitchen countertop requires to stay sanitized.

Contact paper would be very difficult to put a finish/sealer on. You are using basically vinyl (most are anyway) and getting anything to "seal" vinyl would not adhere very well. I do believe that most are water proof anyway.

So I decided to investigate, ha.

I found this blog quite interesting....
