Hi Shirley, we use sugar soap to wash our walls before painting. You'll find it in most hardware stores
You can clean them with a mild soap or use vinegar: https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-Walls-with-Vinegar
TSP is what the pros recommend. Gets all the grease etc off.

TSP (Trisodium phosphate) is often mixed with water and used to wash walls. You can buy it at any hardware store or Walmart.
Unless the walls are greasy, all you need to do is wipe down to remove dust or loose dirt. Then a good primer and your paint.
