Lateral is side-to-side. Did you mean vertical???
Hi. If you are thinking of a hanging garden, you're not limited to what you can grow. Like melons? you can use them by supporting the fruit as it gets heavy by tying the fruit up with -- pantyhose. Bush plants work well when clustered together. But do your research. There are plants that put simply have a grudge against other plants. Neither will grow well together. Happy gardening!
For vertical growing, things like cucumbers, pole beans, and tomatoes are good choices. Here's an article on growing in small spaces: https://thekitchengarten.com/gardening-in-small-spaces/ Good luck!
