But you can get help with a tool they make for this project. The manual ones are under $50 but the electric ones cost several hundred.
You might want to try and just remove it by just seeing if it will come up easily. Some of these are solid pieces attached at only the edges.

I'm not sure how old your house is, but if you have many layers, the oldest may contain asbestos. Check out this link before you begin working on it.
