I've done something similar in the past. I cleaned up the metal, sanded off the tarnish then used a spray primer so that the paint would stick. The I again used spray gold paint to renew the finish. I won't say that it lasted forever, but it did look much better for quite a long time. I hope this helps you. Wishing you the best.
Hello Kim! I had a stand years ago that had gold metal which tarnished. I simply sanded it off with a piece of sandpaper, wiped it down and cleaned it very well, and then got a can of gold spray paint and redid it that way. It lasted for a very long time and I never had to redo it. It looked lovely. I have also listed some other links for more information.
