You can screw through the drywall into the studs - assuming they are wood studs. I assume there are other methods available for metal studs, but I have never built anything with metal studs. There are also many panel and construction adhesives that come in a caulking tube. I might try these to simply glue the drywall to the existing paneling. Half inch is the standard and cheapest drywall available, but 3/8" is lighter and easier to handle. Ensure you get plastic extenders for all of your light and receptacle boxes. These slip into the box and allow you to bring the switch or receptacle back out flush with the new surface.
Hi Lynne,
Dry wall is Plaster - not a good idea, better to use something like hardboard or thin MDF and stick it to existing walls.
Spray foam (closed cell) can be bought in 5 gallon kits. Drill two holes, one top and one near the floor. It will stiffen the walls and actually provide structural integrity to the whole structure. It will be much safer in high wind storms, etc. Check out the post-hurricane photos online after Hurricane Matthew
