How to stain over finished wood floor?

I have beautiful expensive wood floors. Unfortunately they are finished in very dark color (dark mohagony) and the room itself is really dark. I am tempted to refinish/paint the floor in off-white color. Any thoughts?

To stain a lighter color you would need to sand down to raw wood. You can paint but since they are expensive and real wood.....
Since they are real wood floors, I suggest having them sanded completely and then use a whitewash or light stain if you want a lighter floor. You can paint, but paint will scrape off eventually and you will lose the beauty of your wood floors.
Yes, if they are real wood and expensive wood - it will be best to have them sanded down and restain in the color you want.
Sanding is always the best when changing wood floors, be it to change the color of the stain to sanding for refinishing. However, keep in mind that sanding also takes off some of the wood...thus, reducing the thickness (depth) of wood you will have left.
There is a saying, "your wooden floor is only as thick as the first nail." Once the first nail is seen, that is as far down as you can sand. (Flooring nails are put in at an angle usually about midway of the thickness of the wood). So always sand lightly...perhaps with more than one pass instead of rushing in and trying to take off all the old stain color in one sanding.
The more care the installer took when putting down the floor, the safer it will be to change the stain.
