Place thin slices of white potatoes on top of your dirt. Use several slices. They eat the potato and die. It might be the starch. Let your plants dry out first. Those flies love damp dirt. I have also placed sticky mouse traps or sticky fly ribbon on top of the dirt.
Eliminator sells spider and insect traps. Diatomaceous Äšarth would wipe them out, too, or any insect that gets on your plants (it is ineffective when wet but non-poisonous to humans and pets)
These little bugs are fungus gnats. They breed in the soil and when mature come out and fly around and drive us'n's (people) crazy. The easiest, old fashioned way to get rid of them is to buy a package of unfiltered cigarettes, empty the tobacco from one or two in some hot (no longer boiling) water. Let it steep, just as if it were tea. When it's cooled down, use it to water the plants. Great demonstration of how narsty tobacco can be, huh? As far as the extant gnats are concerned, if you wish you can get sticky strips or whatever they're called these days -- sticky paper on a thing that sticks in the soil in the pot. In a few days it/they will collect all there is/are to get rid of. And no more will hatch -- until and unless the soil is reinfested. Keep the cigarettes, wrapped airtight in plastic, with other garden chemicals etc. I have found they keep their strength for insecticide purposes a long time. Happy end of fungus gnats.
I LOVE these Fruit Fly Traps, they are the only thing that work for us!! I would place it near the plants.
Create a trap by mixing 2 Tbs of apple cider vinegar, 1 Tbs of sugar, a few drops of dish soap. Pour mixture into small dish covered with seran wrap with holes punched. The gnats will be attracted to it. Go in and can't get out.
Your welcome. It worked for me.Good luck.
Hi Patrick, hope this helps you.
In a small bowl, mix a half cup of warm water plus two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, a tablespoon of sugar, and about six drops of liquid dish soap. Gnats will be lured in by the sugary mixture, but once they dip in for a drink, the sticky dish soap will trap them.
