Counter from living room side
How can I make this a functional sitting area?
Okay we didn’t have a design team when we had our attached cottage built. That said, the divider wall between kitchen and LR with counter top is too high. It’s a great divider, you can’t see kitchen mess after dinner, but at same time when you go to sit with a drink or coffee, it’s not a real counter top space. Maybe a drop down tier can be added? Mom encloung a photo from both sides of the wall/counter. Thanks, Nanci

You could just add a shelf on the divider as a eating counter.
Yes a minor design flaw that can easily be remedied without major construction. Honestly your builder should have suggested a lower wall with at least a bar height counter. On the entertaining side I would choose some decorative brackets or corbels and add a shelf the length of the wall. Stain to match or if that proves to be too problematic, paint the same color as the wall in a gloss finish for ease of cleaning. That's my vote! Nice space! Lots of room!
It looks more like bar height then counter height stools come in 3 main sizes-table height, counter height, bar height you sure can add additional ledge/counter top to the side you want to sit at or cheaper way buy a long free standing table/ bar here are examples for sale https://www.google.com/search?q=long+thin+free+standing+bar+table&safe=active&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS750US750&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiF3MP8wYLhAhVF7J4KHV0XBsEQsxgILQ&biw=1366&bih=657 OR DIY build one https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=DIY+build+long+thin+table+%2Fbar
I would add a lower shelf with corbels as suggested. You don't have to worry about it sticking out if you make the shelf a little less than the width of the stool seats that way you can push the stools under the shelf and they won't stick out further into the room. I would round off the corners in case you bump into the edge.
