FYI.......Lights out for the T12 Fluorescent Lamp
As of July 1, 2010, a U.S. Department of Energy mandate states that the
magnetic ballasts used in many T12 fixtures will no longer be produced for
commercial and industrial applications. Also, many T12 lamps will be phased
out of production beginning in July 2012. Now is the time to replace or
retrofit your T12 fixtures with more energy-efficient technology, and the BGE
Smart Energy Savers ProgramSM
is here to help.
The above is from Baltimore Gas and Light which does a great job explaining the T12 Fluorescent phase out. Here is the link:

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jun 25, 2012Lori, its not the bulbs that are effected. Its the ballast inside that provides the higher current for the bulbs to glow. They simply cannot stop making bulbs for lights that are currently used, but they can stop the production of the materials that the fixture uses so they cannot make them any more. But as the fixtures begin to burn out the replacement inventory will also diminish and within a few years you will need to completely replace the fixture as parts will no longer be available. So it is good news to know, as you will begin to see all sorts of sales on these fixtures in the home centers as they deplete their inventory of them. They just will not tell you that you cannot get parts to replace them once they break in a few years. So is it really a sale?Helpful Reply

LandlightS on Jun 25, 2012Lori/ Woodbridge...the following from BG&E is not a scare statement as they do not sell ballasts or lamps....only provide the electricity. So as Woodbridge says "they simply can not stop making bulbs"....oh yes they can. And in doing so, they will put that production into the newer technology of T8 and T5 Fluorescent Lamps for the ballasts that they are allowed to manufacturer. As stated..."only 30% of the lamps sold in the US are T12" so the manufacturers are not really losing a great deal by ceasing manufacturer of those lamps. Gary About the Phase-Out • Approximately 30% of all fluorescent lamps sold in the United States are T12 technology. • Responding to new federal regulations on the energy efficiency of fluorescent lamp ballasts, manufacturers soon will phase out production of many T12s. As a result, nearly 70% of all T12 fluorescent lamps sold in the United States will be phased out by July 2012.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jun 25, 2012Interesting, LL. From what I gathered their method is to eliminate the need to have these bulbs therefor the manufacture of the bulbs will on their own slow down on production until its no longer something that anyone would want or can use. By virtually eliminating the equipment that is necessary to use these bulbs, they in effect are taking them out of production without even telling the bulb manufacturers to do so. Great post!Helpful Reply
