How to decide what kind of shade for western sun exposure?
I’m unable to sit in the living room when the sun is out because of the bright sunlight shining through. Can someone recommend a shade to block out the sun completely for 3-4 hours daily? The window is 63” wide by my measurements but does Home Depot come out to measure if you need this service? Also, do I need room darkening or light filtering shades? Thank you once again for your help!

Heat Gain is always better addressed before the sun comes through the windows.
As in an awning or roller shade, outside.
There’s all kinds of awnings out there. Aluminum, composite, wood, acrylic.
Ive also seen people make them out of pvc plumbing pipe and exterior upholstery material. Very easy to install with pipe brackets & lightweight. The pvc has to be painted, or the UV will break down the plastic.
Same issue here and it gets super hot too. I just installed a dual rod and used sheers underneath and lined drapes. I just close the drapes in the afternoon and open up again in the evening.
We got insulating double-honeycomb fabric c blinds from one of the online blinds stores. The double honeycomb really blocks heat or cold. You send exact measurements of the window opening and tell them whether you want them to fit inside the window casing or outside and they figure exact measurements needed. Super easy to install.
whether you get room darkening or filtered light version depends on how much of the light you want to block.
Yes, Home Depot offers home measuring service and installation for window coverings. You pay up front first for the service. After the rep comes to your home and you order your blinds, the cost is then deducted from your order total.
Yes, that is probably faster.
Hi! If you want to enjoy the light, without dealing with the intensity, go with light filtering. Another option is something I've seen listed as solar shades. Basically, they filter the light and heat of direct sun. Call your Home Depot or go online to their website and you can find information about their services and products. An alternative would be a local design firm that offers those services. Stay safe!
