Find some pics you like, sketch it out and then make pattern pieces (like a dress) and assemble the paper one before cutting your own wood.
I would prime and paint the wood pieces, 2 coats, before assembly.
Make sure it can drain if water gets inside.
Any wood will work. New or old. Free plans for you.

Our woodworkers’ guild made a bunch of bluebird houses for a nature center. Plans are readily available in the internet. A nice touch is the cover the roof with an old license plate. It adds character and helps to keep the bird box weatherproof.
