How can I improve the appearance of our lawn?

Repair the lawn where the roots of a tree are above the ground ruining the lawn. The tree can’t be removed and I’m told we can’t cover the roots with dirt

Plant ferns, hostas, flowers, etc. Create a fairy garden.

  • Hi Don,

I know that it can be incredibly difficult to grow grass over areas like this. The ground or dirt is traditionally quite shallow because of the roots. Additionally, these areas tend to be quite shady as well which can also prevent grass from doing well. I would suggest flowers, hostas, ferns, or even lily of the valley. However, lily of the valley can spread like CRAZY. You could also remove the remaining grass and make a landscaping island with stone or wood chips around the tree.

Bleeding heart grows well in shade, beneath trees, as does Lamium, Brunnera, Astilbe, some varieties of Heuchera. Your tree roots may eventually become as long as the tree is tall. Can you at least trim the tree and have branches thinned out or trimmed back?
