You may need a different type of feeder.
When placing a bird feeder, you don't get to choose who comes to feed. The style of bird feeder may help. I use multiple feeders so that even the timid birds have place to eat. Most of my feeders are the fly through style. I have 6 feeders spread throughout the yard.
Most birds like particular types of seeds. I would find out which seeds they like and don't put them out. Also, some birds like the tube feeders and some like the fly through style. You'll need to do some research.

Now Chris-no violence! those birds are usually migrating so be patient, they have long journeys and need food-get cheaper food so it won't hurt your pocketbook so much
They are probably starlings. Sad story there....
