Hi Kimberly! I have a step by step tutorial on how to distress wood with paint here: https://www.simplicityinthesouth.com/how-to-distress-furniture-with-milk-paint-and-wet-cl/ I used milk paint but you could use latex for this technique if you water the paint down.
I like to use a 220 grit piece of sandpaper to create distressing in painted wood. You can also apply really thin paint (water it down) and then wipe off the excess before it dries to create a distressed look.
