They are vents. We have the exact same ones on our roof.
Hi Jim: They could be vents to let the hot air out of the attic area. If you ever consider getting a new roof, ask the roofers to install a ridge vent. It's a vent that goes along the top of the roof and lets the hot air out. I got one and it's made a difference in how cool my house is - with your attic fans, it should be great1 - and in the winter, for some reason, my house is warmer :)
