What saw is best?
I would like to do small- to medium-size wood projects but would like a saw that is easy for me to use. I have larger saws inherited from my Dad but I don't have anyone right now who can show me how to properly use them. So, what kind of saw could I get that would be somewhat versatile, is not very heavy, and is easy to use? Thanks in advance!

My first saw was a jigsaw. It bailed me out on a lot of projects. It's portable and you can cut huge sheets of plywood or small pieces of wood with it. You just need to draw where you are cutting and have a steady hand to cut straight.
You could also get a circular saw. You'll probably want to get a jig that will help it cut straight and accurately though.
are you asking about hand saws or electric saws
A word to the wise, power tools aren’t toys and they’re really unforgiving. You need to know beforehand where to place your hands, feet and body parts your fond of. I’ve worked full time with power tools for over 30yrs and they still do unexpected things.
They make 4” circular saws, that I’m eyeing, ha ha.
I studied circular saws for a long time and bought a 7 lb Ryobi at HD for about $75. It was the lightest I could find for that caliber of saw. In the $120 range, Dewalt makes a 6 lb.
As with all saws, you need to buy many blade types because if you try to cut 2x4’s with your 200 tooth Veneer blade you will ruin. I did that.
Jigs are specific “fences” that are either clamped or screwed onto the piece for precision cuts.
You’ll be able to hand cut a straight line 18” long with patience and practice.
I use either my 4’ level or a straight 2x2 for my fences. I don’t buy fences that can’t function as something else.
For the next step up, buy either a table saw or a radial arm saw, both should have an angle function so the blade can cut miters.
Thank you all for the great info!
A jigsaw is a great starter saw as it can get you through most projects. They’re super easy to use - insert the blade and turn it on. Test it out on scrap pieces to get the hang of it.
