Do you mean indoors ot outdoors?
Indoors, keep your screens in good repair and screen doors shut.

big bag of water suspended from a tree, the water will magnify a fly making it into the bad boy or girl, and no others come near it.

To add to what Dfm said above, an old Southern tradition is to tape a baggie of water to the outside of your glass patio door. The theory is that flies see their eyes maginified in the water and think it is a HUGE bug and get the heck out of there!
