Put on a pair of protective gloves to keep chemicals off your hands. Wash the shower rod with a clean, cotton cloth dipped in dishwashing liquid mixed with some warm water to remove any dirt and other substances, such as accumulated hair-spray droplets or hair conditioner.
if metal and rusty rub down with either steel wool,brillo pads or aluminum foil rolled in wad;plastic coated hot water and Dawn dish soap with scrubber sponge add some vinegar to mix if moldy/mildew on it. wipe ends that are going on wall with rubbing alcohol to make them less slippery when you reinstall them.
Sometimes it’s easier to buy a new one. Reason is if you add up the items you need and chemical exposure it may be easier and cheaper to buy new.
I love to fix things but sometimes it’s not worth it in the end with chemicals and all.
With the new one make sure your bathroom fan is engaged to help with moisture ruining the rod.
Car wax may help too.
