Free garden edging from branches about 2" + or minus. Cut to different lengths, 8", 10" 12" etc. and pound them in the ground next to each other staggering lengths. All you need are fresh cut branches and a saw and hammer.
I found some garden edging made of a spongy black rubber in Lowe's garden department. It is very ordinary looking, but it can be bent into various curvy shapes to outline a free-form garden bed. It comes in lengths of about 4 feet. Just place as you want it, and use the provided pegs to hold it in place on the ground. If your plants are luxuriant, no one will notice the utilitarian black edging, and you can mow up close to it.
