It’s a hassle but it really is best to strip the wallpaper before painting. You would see the seams of the paper under the paint.
I just did this in my house. I used a spray bottle with very hot water. Spray -leave on a few minutes pry up edge of paper with putty knife and then scrape paper off. I did a small area at a time. Be sure to put old blanket or sheet on floor to catch the drips and wet wall paper. Worked great for me.
Steam it off. Any tool rental will have what you need.
Make sure you get all the glue residue off. Leaving it shows through paint
