Carpenter or wood bees are pollinators and therefore important to our ecosystem. Unless they are being too destructive, you should just let them be (pun intended).
Jan...They will destroy a home! My husband has worked with a friend of his for years trying to keep them from eating a cabin he has in the mountains. They have filled holes and finally wrapped exposed timbers with tin to stop them. We were there a few weeks ago and they are boring again on any place they can find. He worked on places again trying to discourage them but they can truly destroy a house. He did the mason jar traps but they are too smart for that!
They are very sensitive to smell. You can spray WD-40, but that can get very expensive. We use termite control Hi-Yield 38Plus, mixed to termite ratio, in a garden sprayer. Spray the area well and they will stop drilling in your wood. We do it twice a year and has been very effective for us.
