How do you position the "drain guard" that is place under the downspout to direct rain water. What direction is it place to direct water flow?

If it's the one shaped like a wedge, the wide part should be away from the house, Marlene.
Make sure it extends at least 10' from your foundation, to avoid any potential for future damage. You can always place the drain guard in a trench, then "daylight " it, so it's not a tripping hazard.
