Are these “tin tiles” replicas of old tin ceilings? Or are they “tin shingles”?
I’m trying to help you with “exposed” fasteners concepts.
As you know, “Hardy backer board” will not tolerate nails. It will crack and ruin the cementicious fiber board.
You can screw in the tiles with small stainless screws and construction adhesive, after you’ve pre-drilled pilot holes. Stainless addresses future corrosion challenges, as they aren’t tin, they’re either mild steel or aluminum.
If they’re polymer/composite plastic, you can’t use them with 12-18” of the firebox, per your local Codes.
Just using heavy construction adhesive will require smaller tiles and taping them in place, a course at a time, until they dry.
Use a construction adhesive to adhere them. Liquid nails, Locktite Power Grab, etc. A glob in every corner and one in the center. Blue painter tape to hold them in place while the glue dries.
