Do you have a patio or deck? I would have a sitting area and if it isn't shaded, perhaps consider a pergola or some other type of shade. You could start with a small garden in an area in your yard that has sunlight. If you have any trees, I always enjoy mulching around mine and placing some hostas around the base, which grow great in the shade. I have a rose garden along a corner side of my house (where my kitchen window faces) and I have a bird bath in the middle where I've filled it with dirt and I have a fairy garden with succulents and annuals. You could do a small veggie garden with pots on your patio/deck. Lots of ideas!!
Think about the mood you would like. Is it bright and fun for children or something a bit more mature. Either way you need plenty of seating and evening lighting.
