How do i figure out if a wood beam will work better than a steel beam
i'm trying to do a home improvement to our kitchen. we wNt to open up the kitchen area and remove a wall but want to use a wood beam. It will look better than a steel beam and was thinking we maybe able to find a barn timber to use for it.

clad the steel beam in wood. steel is much stronger will last longer.
It depends on the look metel will have to be covered unless it’s a decorative metel wood you could leave it
My vote is to use a steel beam and clad it with reclaimed wood. Make sure you pull your permits and follow local Building code.
Have you already compared the costs of each of the options mentioned above?
