Hi Beverly, you'll need to get under there with some granular ant killer. They're pretty resilient though, so be sure be on the lookout for where they move the hill. Good luck!
Are they living in the tree or they like the tree sap to eat?
Find their nest, after you spray the tree with a garden hose that has a yard chemical reaevoir attachment (mine is an Ortho). I would spray it with Sevin or whatever kills ants (read the labels at the store).
They will come back, so you’ll need to re-spray if you don’t find their nest.
To treat the nest, make it so they have to walk through food grade diatomaceous earth. It is not a pesticide, it grinds through their exoskeletons like diamond dust. Don’t breath the dust from it and wear gloves.
This is what we used around the perimeter of the nursing home I worked at. They take it back to the nest and it kills them. Just sprinkle it around.
