My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.
Power wash with a detergent solution.
I have had good luck with a wire brush on an angle grinder. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES AND LONG SLEEVES/PANTS
Power wash, but do not use the heavy setting. Start off light and use a cleaner degreaser to get all the gunk off.
After power washing, let dry, then use a garden sprayer to liberally apply Wet n' Forget Outdoors to the brick. Do not rinse.
It will take some months, but the difference is amazing.
