Adhere cement board to the wall with screws that are counter sunk into the board.
Advise to use pre-mixed mastik, it works best in my experience.
Make sure to use spacers, eye balling never works as well as you think it will.
Use painter's tape to secure tile temporarily.
Invest in either a wet saw or a tile saw blade.
Kathy is right on how to do it. You can usually rent a tile saw. Home depot and lowes give classes on how to tile. As for design, it depends on what king of tile you plan to work with.
