Nancy, you can rent a carpet stretcher at most tool rentals. You kick it with your knee. I've also used my own feet, in a pinch, by skidding across the carpet or lifting the edge and kicking it. It's not as effective, but you can get a tripping hazard moved over to the edge that way.
You need to rent a carpet stretcher, remove most everything in room. Watch you tube for tutorials on how to stretch your carpet.
