Somewhere that has nice lighting and can close the door. Preferably has a,hard floor, not carpet for needles to get stuck in.

    Hi Mary,

I think that it would depend on what kind of sewing you'll be doing. If you need room to cut out patterns and/or lay out fabric, you'll want a room big enough to handle a table as well as your sewing machine. If you plan on doing mending, you won't need as much room but an area without carpet would be best. If you're thinking about what area of your home would work best, again, I think it depends on your household. If you have young children who need supervision as you work, you'll need it to be near where they play the most often. However, if you want it to be a "get-away" where you can think and plan what you're doing, it would be best if it's somewhere away from the main rooms in your home. My daughter closed off the end of a large bedroom to give herself a private area to sew, but the other part of the room would work if she needed more room. Only you can decide what will work for you based on your family and the type of sewing you'll be doing. Wishing you the best.

Any room where you have the room to store everything and work and spread things out to work. I use the spare bedroom in the basement.

Hi Mary, I have a sewing room and the thing I like most are first a door, you can walk away and leave projects. Having lots of light is also very important to be able to see your projects. I love open storage, get to your supplies quickly. Hope this is helpful. Enjoy your area.

do you have a guestroom? if so, and it isn't used 'too' often, that would be the perfect place (to my mind). you could steal a corner for your sewing machine table--even another skinny table (on casters?) to put at right angles and move away when needed. hanging storage on the wall above (shelving w/or without doors) and then, you could always take part of the closet if there is one in that space. save half for guests to use--the rest: build in shelves with bins for your fabric and notions storage. having a door (as peggy mentioned) would be a necessity if you have both guests and/or pets. :) even the smallest space could be made very functional with great use of storage. PS: if your machine could fold down into the table or be stored away, the sewing table could be covered with a lace tablecloth for use by guests? i'm very partial to multi-use spaces. i'd also have shelves to the ceiling for all of my knitting/other craft books. :) fwiw i'm a knitter and have a small 'loft' space I've outfitted with shelves filled with baskets of yarn and my books, a work table/chair, lights and much of what I've described.

Thank you Elizabeth and all. great suggestions. We have two guest rooms. I have a full basement with a small kitchen, full bedroom and bathroom. i also have an office in the basement as well as closets designed for antiques and collectibles, as we have an antique booth in our local antique town/mall and thus the need to hold all the inventory. i am a quilter and also a knitter. I collect magazines and books on design and decorating. All on shelves. The basement has a separate entrance, and i hate to go outside in the rain-all winter. i also have various sewing machines, a large ironing table, and work table. I like your idea of using one of the guest room closets/and a corner as a sewing station with one of my machines and duplicate supplies to remain inside the upstairs of our home. The basement to house can then hold the other sewing and embroidery machines, and supplies. We also have a smaller ironing board in our laundry room. We still own an Ironrite mangle too for pressing large tablecloths. Our kids are married and thus just two grandsons who like to play wherever I am while they are with us. I should be a minimalist, but love art and design. My idea of fun is hitting old flea mkts., thrift shops ....but I must exercise control. I am not a hoarder, and donate to charities, etc. i just need to keep a central location in the basement and a satellite sewing area in a guestroom. And am very blessed and grateful for all God has given me to use here on earth. Thank you for helping me regain focus.
