How can I widen bed springs?
I want to "widen" spread out, my old bread springs to put some insulators inside. What will widen the insulators? Like widening a shoe.

Hi Liz,
Bed springs are formed by machines that use a lot of force to make the coil. They are designed to stay tight with quite a bit of pressure on them. You might be able to warm them to allow a little give to them, but when they cool, most likely they'll go back to the original size. You could try using a pair of pliers to gradually bend the wire out, but it would very difficult to keep it's shape. My SIL works with metal but he uses a blow torch and a complete safety face mask plus gloves - always. I wish I could be more help. I've searched my brain and online for ideas that would work for you but came up with nothing more. :( Wishing you the best.
Springs are factory installed with proper spacing and tension. Anything you use, if you find a way, will disfigure the springs from the original configuration. You would be tilting the springs creating angles and bumps. They would not lay flat.
I want to use them like a candle holder but for insulators. The insulators will not fit as the coil is too tight. I cannot add enough heat to get them to expand but there has to be a way just like with shoes that are made a certain width and then you use a shoe expander to make them even more wide...hope that makes sense
I did this but unless they are thinner wire you may just need to glue the insulator on top of the spring. Use E6000 glue which will stick to anything.
