How can I safely get rid of ants (not sugar ants) in my microwave?
Yesterday ants started invading my microwave. I need a safe method for cleaning the microwave and getting rid of the ants before they invade the kitchen.
Oh yes...ants! UGH. Have MANY here in SC but have discovered what works for me. Pour white vinegar with maybe 1/3 water added in a spray bottle (or pour directly) onto areas with ants....including ant hills, cracks in driveway, patio....etc.. This really works since ants HATE the smell of vinegar! Good thing is I buy the large jugs of Kroger brand white vinegar which is so cheap! I always keep jugs of the stuff around since it's great for lots of things. I recently had about 6-7 large ant hills in my backyard, poured this on them and the next day they were gone and ants are "rebuilding" the site. PLEASE note, if you spray in your yard, it will turn the grass brown for a while but will return to green eventually. Best and cheapest way for me to kill ants and probably other bugs too!!!! Good Luck
oops........I meant ants AREN'T rebuilding the site! SORRY!
Hello! I like the ease of a commercial ant trap— both indoors and outdoors. The Terro brand that I have used with great sucess with -is recommended quite highly. You can check out the reviews and Q&A here— to see if it would meet your needs.
Once you get these traps in place the ant problem is distant memory. They are very effortless, effective and cost-effective. They do not smell badly like an ant aerosol spray does.
I sometimes also use Terro outdoor versions— outside around the foundation perimeter as the ants can be seen under rocks and in my seasonal flowering planters, the do like shade and moisture.

Hi Gloria,
The ants you see are worker ants looking for food to take back to the colony, when they crawl across your countertops/bathroom they leave a trail of pheromones to let the other ants know where to follow. This trail can be interrupted by a thorough repeated cleaning with something like window cleaner, vinegar, Diatoomaceous earth (food grade), and other cleaners compatible with your countere surfaces.
A product that they can take back to their colony is Terro, available in DIY stores, look for the orange box. It is a liquid you put on a piece of non-porous cardboard, they feed on it and take it back home with them.
In addition to this we put down Jiffy corn meal outside the room where they are entering. Do not bake, use it directly from the box.
Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth will not only get rid of the ants and other creepy crawlers, but they take it to the nest and it destroys the colony. The reason for food grade is that if you have pets or little rug rats it is harmless if they get it in their mouth. It is available at feed store and some large hardware stores.
