Use 4x4 square posts for the legs of the platform and cut to the height you want the mattress to sit on. Use one leg for each corner and 1 or 2 in the middle if you think extra support is needed. Cut a piece of plywood the size needed for your mattress. You can use a jigsaw to round the edges of the plywood if the square corners will be a hazard. Put screws through the plywood into the legs. Then paint or stain if you don't want it left plain. Just put the mattress on top. No box springs needed because the plywood gives all the support you need. We built a queen size bed like this and used a 3-door screen as a headboard. It was very inexpensive and looks great.
Use a couple of free pallets.

I would not recommend using pallets for this purpose.
Any bed platform must be strong enough to support considerable weight without heaving. Pallet boards split, crack, and break when taken apart. Also, because they are not uniform size, it will be very difficult to make a platform that is level.
