Hi, you can heat the glue with a heat gun or hair dryer set on high. Make sure to hold the heat gun at three inches away from the glue and don't touch the heat gun to the glue. Use a floor scrapper and scrape it up. Don't dig the scraper into the wood and work in small sections. You may need to do it a few times to get all the glue off.
Maybey a cloth and n iron? Gently pull up cloth as ironing.. try on hidden spot first.. or possibly "goof off"!??
As I am sure this is not a small dot or glob, but an entire room, I am going to break your rules and strongly suggest hiring professional floor refinishers, with equipment they comprehend and carefully maintain, and let them go through all that sandpaper, and make sure they hang plastic to enclose the room and cover your vents. Then clean like heck. Much old linoleum and even glues contained asbestos. An acquaintance once demanded I assist such a project, which I did not want to do, knew it put us in danger, the machinery too heavy permanently damaged my back and in the end the hard rock maple floors still needed professional help, like her hard head, as I so long bullied.
Yes, rooms have to be emptied and one needs other rooms, spaces, garage etc to move junk temporarily into. That is why so many beautiful old and very valuable woods get covered by quick fixes, but those old trees... priceless.
First things first: try mopping the floor with warm water and real TSP. I had the same problem with vinyl glued to unfinished wood. Almost killed myself with solvents. Nothing budged. Hubby then said screw it, we'll just cover it up. He then mopped the floor with TSP to remove the solvent residue. Viola! All the glue started coming off. Turns out, it was water soluble. The glue used in the kitchen to put down indoor-outdoor carpet onto vinyl was NOT water soluble! Took mineral spirits to get that up and LOTS OF VENTILATION!!!
