I updated mine with a hybrid contact wall paper. It's been up for 2 years and doing fantastic. You can see it here - https://chascrazycreations.com/inexpensive-laundry-room-makeover/
They can be painted, but it's important to prep with a little sanding and a good coat of primer. I use Kilz.
...clean well, remove all hinges and hardware (signs of an amateur job) then put on two coats of GOOD latex paint. Once reassembling, treat your cabinet nicely for at least a month while the paint cures.

You could paint them or do a cover application such as concrete or expoxy over something decorative like pennies, glass pieces, or whatever you like. You could also do tile over top, but i don't like the grout lines of tile for a flat surface personally. It looks like though. We did a paint application in our bathroom that looks like granite when complete. Check it out. https://amzn.to/2JP3vYR
