How do I hang a front door that the hinge marks dont line up?

I purchased a real nice front door at a Habitat for Humanity store for real cheap. The Hinge marks don't line up & neither does the dead bolt hole. Could I get some pointers from those who have done this kind of thing?

    Hello Letitia,

Well you have to decide to take off your door furniture and splice in timber to fill the gaps made, likewise with the hinge plates on the frame. Then position the door with hinges in place. I presume you have both sides of the door lock, so you can replace catch on your door frame to line up with the door.

Hanging a door is not as easy as removing one, and fitting an old door on to a different frame can have it's problems. New doors are normally slightly bigger than required just to allow for a little adjustment when fitting. I had all my doors replaced throughout my home with old doors of a better quality If and know If I had tried to fit them it would have taken far, far longer than paying for the Carpenter to do it! If concerned to get it right first time, call in a carpenter who will probably have fitted many doors, it will be worth it in the end.

Thank you for the advice. I have had 3 bids ranging from $700 to $1500. I was hoping to do it my self.

Fill in the other places and mske new ones. Just be sure to measure and mark carefully. You might find a video on youtube.

  • I agree with Leah, filling in the old holes with wood filler, sanding and painting should cover them well. Good luck!
