Cracking usually occurs with inconsistent timing of watering, or even a heavy rainfall. It has to do with the tomatoes taking on water in spurts. Even though I consistently water, especially if it is hot and dry, if we have a lot of rain fall one day, some of them start splitting, just because of the amount of moisture in the soil so quickly. My tomatoes that split the most are in the ground, my potted ones are much easier to control and be consistent in the amount of daily water according to the weather and hardly ever split even with rain.
