How much sanding is required on an old piece of furniture to restain?
How much sanding do you need to do on an old piece of wood furniture, in order to re stain it. I want to refinish wood with black stain so it sort of looks painted black but with plenty of wood grain showing through. I really think it would look fantastic.

You need to sand down to bare wood. You wipe the stain on, then off to get the desired effect. Always apply with the grain of the wood. Home Depot gives free classes, check them out. Or look for free or low cost classes from your local municipality, college or adult education center. Or watch a lot of You Tube and practice first on scrap wood to get the technique down pat.

Agree with Naomie. Sand down to raw wood. Apply the stain either with a brush or cloth and wipe off with a clean cloth. Seal with three coats of a water based polyurethane.
