Hi Linda. Watch the weather for threat of frost. If you plant early, be prepared to cover plants as needed. I usually allow a 3'x3' area for each tomato plant and bury them up to the first leaf on the stalk. Mature plants get very heavy and can pull the roots out of the ground. While plants are still manageable, I place a support (tomato cage) around each one. Make sure the cage is secure. The weight of a mature plant can topple a support if its not secure. As far as cucumbers, one plant can produce a lot. I keep my cucumber plant(s) off to one side of my garden as it can spread 10ft or more .
Make sure to give all plants a drink of water upon planting. Good luck!
Some people have tried putting cukes on a trellis. You can also use old half barrels for above ground planting. We used to use lots of horse manure for the cucumber and melon patches. They like fertilizer.
With tomatoes it helps to place a circle of cardboard(like a collar) to keep cut worms away from them.
