Arie'na: Maybe this will help:
I have two metal locking boxes for insurance paperwork, guarantees, and other important papers. But I plan on painting over both and adding my name on one and my husband’s on the other, and maybe some embellishments. Since the boxes are not fireproof, we have the really important documents in a safety deposit box at our bank.
You could also use Contact paper and colored adhesive tape. With a top coat of clear adhesive paper or a few coats of clear polyurethane spray, the covering should last until you are ready for a new look.
Best wishes! Jewell
I have a filing cabinet that is wood - looks like a piece of furniture.
I used an old magazine rack from the thrift store to make a portable office that holds important papers beautifully https://www.homeroad.net/2018/08/space-saving-portable-home-office.html
