I have the same problem. I have two fur babies I keep a rag towel next to the door and clean their feet when they come in. I also have a long runner in front of the door to help with dirty paws. Hope this helps.

There is a rug called the Waterhog can be purchased online at different price levels. It helps but I keep a microfiber cloth that I wet and wipe the dogs feet off when they come it. Yes it is a task but I have a laundry room that I can contain them in to do so until they get in the house. If you have a doggie door that they can run in and out at will buy a waterhog carpet and it does control some of the dirt as they walk in.

I have no idea so when you find out, please let me know. If it wasn't dirt but grass that would help. If it was a small area you could put down artificial turf. They make some great looking ones now but I don't think you want that expense. Dogs love to dig, if it was gravel that would help but isn't attractive unless you use it within a design.
So, lastly, a pail of water at the door, dip the paws in it and wipe off. You'll do this about 2 times and say the heck with it.
What is in your yard? Do you have grass? Gravel? Do they have a pet door? I have 6+ dogs and 6 cats going in and out constantly. Only access to the yard is through my kitchen through the pet door. I do have a concrete patio immediately outside the door which helps. The rest is grass and thick gravel or mulch in the flower beds. I also have waterhog mats just inside the pet door.
